DonELTA Online Conference 2020 (English)

The 12th annual international conference for teachers of English DonELTA 2020 "Zooming In on Key Challenges in ELT" was held online December 2-6, 2020. The free basic package is no longer available. The recordings and certificates of attendance will be available for purchase till November 21, 2021.

The 12th annual international conference for teachers of English DonELTA 2020 took place online on December 2-6, 2020. The organiser of the conference is the Don English Language Teachers’ Association (DonELTA).

The Conference includes the following strands:

  • ELT Methodology;
  • Young Learners and Teens (YLTs);
  • Exam Skills and Assessment;
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL);
  • Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Inclusive Practices.

Online participation is free. The number of participants is limited.

Conference formats include talks, workshops, research papers, “fishbowl” sessions (classroom observation), networking sessions, and evening entertainment.

The sessions will be recorded (except for those marked "no recording" in the program). The link to the recordings for those purchasing the Premium Package will work for a year.

Basic package is free and includes online participation only (available till 6 December 2020).

Premium package costs 2500 roubles (~25 GBP) (~20 GBP, if paid until 25 November). This package offers online participation, access to video recordings till 21 November 2021, and an e-certificate of participation (50 hours).
 

The DonELTA Key Speakers

Penny Ur was educated at the universities of Oxford (MA), Cambridge (PGCE) and Reading (MATEFL). She emigrated to Israel in 1967, where she still lives today.

Penny Ur has thirty years’ experience as an English teacher in primary, secondary and tertiary education. Now retired, she has taught courses at BA and MA level at Oranim Academic College of Education and Haifa University, and has lectured extensively at language teachers’ conferences worldwide. She is interested in all aspects of language-teaching methodology, but in particular in issues of vocabulary and grammar in language teaching, language-learning activity design and, more recently, English as an international language and the place of research as a source of professional knowledge.

She was for ten years the editor of the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series. Her books include Grammar practice activities (2nd Edition) (2009), Vocabulary activities (2012), A course in English language teaching (2012), Discussions and more (2014), Penny Ur’s 100 tips (2016).

Penny Ur was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for services to English Language Teaching in 2013.

Chris Roland  is a trainer and methodology writer based at ELI, a language academy in Seville. He has worked with teachers in numerous countries and contexts. He is a tutor on Trinity Certificate and Diploma courses for OxfordTEFL, Barcelona, and has held positions with the British Council in both Spain and Syria. His first book Understanding Teenagers in the ELT classroom (2018) was nominated for an ELTon award. His second book Structuring Fun for Young Learners in the ELT Classroom (2020) has also recently been published by Pavilion — with another volume Structuring Fun for Young Language Learners Online also about to come out.

His current areas of work are: helping teachers to adapt to online teaching for YL’s and teens, coping with L1 and student cross-talk, the psychological terrain of a teacher’s working day, task design, the micro-mechanics of going over exercises and the workings of what we call ‘fun’.

His sessions are highly practical and filled with photos, anecdotes and examples of student work from his own lessons. 

Lindsay Warwick is a teacher, trainer and materials writer with over 20 years’ teaching experience. She is a NILE online tutor, working on courses including Materials Development for Language Education course and Preparing students for IELTS. She is co-author of several courses including Roadmap (Pearson), Gold Preliminary (Pearson), IELTS Expert (Pearson) and Skillful (Macmillan).

Annamaria Pinter is a Reader at the Department of Applied Linguistics, the University of Warwick, UK. Her research interests focus on all aspects of second/ foreign language education for children, task-based second language teaching and learning and engaging children actively in research. She has published widely in the area of teaching English to children and has a strong international reputation in TEYL and second language teacher education. She is the author of Teaching Young Language Learners Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers, Oxford University Press (second edition, 2017) and Children Learning Second Languages, Palgrave Macmillan (2011). She is also the joint series editor of the Multilingual Matters series entitled Early Language learning in School Contexts.

 

Keith Kelly. An education consultant based in Bulgaria, Keith is founder of the Forum for Across the Curriculum Teaching (www.factworld.info), author of Macmillan’s Science and Geography Vocabulary Practice Series and consultant to Macmillan’s onestopclil website. Keith was made a Fellow of IUPAC (The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) for his contributions their education programme and, along with Phil Ball and John Clegg, is co-author of OUP’s ’Putting CLIL into Practice’ (2015) and is also consultant to the CLIL versioning on www.tigtagworld.co.uk a web-based video platform for Science and Geography education. Keith was winner of the 2017 innovation in teacher resources ELTons award for his work in TigTagCLIL. Keith is also co-author of TrashedWorld  a global schools’ exchange platform of waste investigations. Keith’s also owns a school in his home town of Plovdiv. Anglia School  provides English language classes entirely based on principles of content and language integrated learning.


 
Natalia Wright has been an EFL teacher and teacher trainer for over 20 years in Russia and other countries. Now based in Kuwait, she works as an English instructor at the University of the Middle East. She holds an MA in Language Education from the University of Chichester, UK, and currently is an EdD student at the University of Glasgow.
